How to Find Flow When Nothing’s Flowing
Cultivating discipline and surrender for optimal performance
If you’re familiar with “finding flow”, you may also know the unpleasant feelings conjured when one struggles to find flow when nothing is flowing. As a writer, I know a thing or two about this unwelcome phenomenon.
The essence of the flow state, also known as “Wu Wei” in Taoism, translates as “effortless action”, “inaction”, or “inexertion”, combined with complete immersion in profound presence. It’s a state of unburdened by past or future concerns. Existing within this “nowness” allows for peace and a deep connection with the present moment.
Flow state can be experienced in various activities, including writing, reading, drawing, driving, painting, surfing, running, walking, or even washing dishes. The point is that when we achieve it, whatever we’re doing, we do in flow — hence, we’re in the realms of optimal performance. Far from being an invitation to couch-surf and do nothing, achieving this mental condition aligns performance with uninterrupted focus and a genuine energetic connection. It’s effortless.
